About the Artist

Hello, my name is Marlene Cronkhite.

I don't think I can remember a time when I didn't have a pen, pencil or paint brush in hand, sketching or painting, or even doodling a portrait, usually of a friend or family member.

Perhaps it's fate or maybe even fortune, because I've always felt something was missing in my life if I didn't have some kind of art project in the works. The black and white painting to the right is a younger version of yours truly. So you see, hopefully without sounding too vain, I couldn't even resist painting a portrait of myself.

So here I go again, creating a showcase just for you.

I've often heard that portrait painting is the ultimate artistic challenge. However, I think for me, it is not only a challenge, but it gives me a feeling of extreme pleasure to capture the personality and the beauty within an individual.

In large part, I am self-taught; however, I must pay tribute to my beloved art teacher, Margaret Hunter, from Indio, California. At the age of eighty, Margaret taught me a lot about oil painting in the small living room of her mobile home. She became my teacher and my inspiration for a few wonderful years late in my life before she passed. Thank you Margaret, I miss you.

And thank you for reading a little about me. I hope to hear from you soon. Of course, I would very much like to paint your portrait.

My very best to you,

Marlene Cronkhite
